A half shaped shell icon! Une icone en forme de demi-coquille !

Located along the banks of the Charles Rivers, in Boston, this half shell shaped open-air theater, known as the “Hatch Shell” is a national icon and a precious asset to the city's culture. From Spring to early fall, it hosts almost every night during summer, a great deal of free performing arts and concerts, including the popular Boston Pops Orchestra for the fourth of July celebration. The Hatch Shell, made of zigzag interior pattern of teak wood was built in 1941 with a trust donated by Maria Hatch who left her fortune to numerous charities. In her will, she asked a Memorial to be open for the public use, in honor of her late brother Edward.

Trivia: A famous rock and roll band performed at the Hatch Shell last year. Which one?

Situé sur les rives de la Charles River, à Boston, ce théâtre à ciel ouvert en forme de demi-coquille, connu sous le nom de "Hatch Shell" est une icone nationale et un atout précieux pour la culture de la ville. A partir du printemps et jusqu'au début de l'automne, il accueille, presque chaque soir pendant l'été, une multitude de spectacles et concerts gratuits, en particulier le célèbre Boston Pops Orchestra pour la fête du 4 juillet. Le Hatch Shell, recouvert, à l'intérieur, de bois de teck avec des motifs en zigzag, fut construit en 1941 grâce à des fonds laissés par Maria Hatch qui légua sa fortune à de nombreuses œuvres caritatives. Dans son testament, elle stipula qu’un Mémorial soit crée pour le public, en hommage à son frère défunt, Edward.

According to their endings:

Common French Masculine endings :

• Nouns ending in -ement, -ament: un testament (a will), un moment (a moment), un mouvement (a move/ a movement), un évènement (an event) etc...
• Nouns ending in -oir: le soir (evening), un devoir (homework/duty), a miroir ( a miror), un mouchoir(handkerchief).

Common French Feminine endings :

• Nouns ending in -ette: une devinette (a riddle/ a trivia), une cigarette (a cigarette), une chaussette (a sock), la vitesse (speed), une serviette (a towel) etc... Except: un squelette.

Flying like a bird ! Voler comme un oiseau !

This week-end I discovered Skydiving. But since I am not brave enough to jump off a plane, I opted for the solution of the wind tunnel simulator through which air is driven by a huge fan at approximately 120 mph. After a brief training class to learn how to control body positions, I was equipped with a suit, goggles, helmet, and earplugs and then entered the air chamber (about 24 feet high). Once inside (with an instructor next to me) I was flying like a bird for about 1mn per session. What a thrilling feeling and free of panic!

Ce week-end, j’ai découvert la chute libre. Mais comme je n’ai pas le courage de sauter d’un avion, j’ai opté pour la solution du simulateur de chute libre à l’intérieur duquel l’air est actionné par une puissante soufflerie atteignant à peu près 193 km/h. Après une rapide formation de base pour apprendre à contrôler la position du corps, j’ai revêtu une combinaison, un masque, un casque et des boules Quiès, avant d’être propulsée dans le tunnel de simulateur de vol (d’une hauteur d’environ 7m30). Une fois à l’intérieur (avec un moniteur à mes côtés), je me suis élevée dans les airs, volant comme un oiseau pendant 1mn par session. Quelle sensation palpitante et sans panique!

Well! Look at the highlighted nouns in the text above. To find out whether you have a feminine or a masculine noun you can use a rule according to its ending. For instance:

Common French Masculine endings :

Eh oui! Malgré le froid et la neige, les mannequins doivent pauser dehors parfois pendant de longs moments et garder le sourire en toutes circonstances, bien sûr. Quel dur métier!

Sur leur trente et un! All dressed up!

Madame Mallard et ses 8 canetons s'étaient mis hier sur leur "trente et un" pour les festivités du Nouvel An. Cette sculpture en bronze, créée par l’artiste Nancy Schön, a été installée dans le jardin public du “Boston Common” en 1987. Elle rend hommage à Robert McCloskey, l’auteur du célèbre livre pour enfant “Make Way for Ducklings” (faites la place aux canetons) qui raconte l’histoire d’un couple de canards (Monsieur et Madame Mallard) parcourant Boston à la recherche d’un endroit sûr pour élever leurs enfants. Nancy Schön a utilisé le livre et les esquisses fournis par l’auteur pour réaliser sa sculpture. Tous nos meilleurs voeux pour une très Bonne et Heureuse Année 2008 !

Mrs Mallard and her 8 ducklings were dressed up for the New Year's Eve festivities. This bronze sculpture created by artist Nancy Schön was installed in the Boston Common Public Garden, in 1987. It is a tribute to Robert McCloskey the author of the famous children book “Make Way for Ducklings” that tells the story of a pair of ducks (Mr and Mrs Mallard) going all the way through Boston to look for a safe place to raise their ducklings. Nancy Schön used the book and original sketches given by the author to make her sculpture. Our best wishes for a very Happy New Year.

They agree in gender and number with the noun they modify and with the thing(s) possessed, not with the possessor (as it is the case in English).

EXPRESSION DE LA SEMAINE / EXPRESSION OF THE WEEK

se mettre sur son trente et un (31): to dress up "to the nines".

The origin of this expression is controversial. The most common explanation would go back to the Middle Age expression "mettre son trentain" (trentain was a luxurious piece of fabric). Over the years, "trentain" became trente et un. Others claim it could be related to a famous card deck played in France in the 19th century where 31 was the game point. A third possibility would refer to a military origin when Prussian soldiers were given extra money on the 31st of the month. For that occasion they celebrated and dressed up.

Buried! Ensevelie!

Cette photo a été prise à Cambridge la semaine dernière après la tempête de neige. Un grand nombre de voitures sont ainsi ensevelies après le passage du chasse-neige. Espérons que le propriétaire de ce véhicule ne sera pas trop pressé de quitter sa place !

This picture has been taken in Cambridge last week, after the snow storm. A large amount of cars are buried like this after the snow plough has passed. Let’s hope that the owner of this vehicle won’t be in a hurry to leave his parking spot.

Massachusetts!

Before the European explorers arrived, this land was occupied by Algonquian Indians who made their home in the hills so they can have an open view of the area. Thus, they called themselves Massachusetts which means “the great hills”. The Blue Hills Reservation is a 7,000 acres park located in the South of Boston. From this summit, you can see in the distance, the prudential tower (on the left) and the John Hancock tower (on the right).

Avant que les explorateurs européens n’arrivent, cet endroit était occupé par les indiens algonquiens qui, afin d’avoir une vue dégagée sur les environs, avaient installé leur huttes sur des collines. Ils se donnèrent ainsi le nom de Massachusetts qui signifiait "les grandes collines". The Blue Hills Reservation est un parc de 7,000 acres qui se situe dans le sud de Boston. De ce sommet, on aperçoit au loin les tours Prudential (à gauche) et John Hancock (à droite).
