Reflecting sunset

The shining John Hancock tower in the distance is catching a glimpse of the sunset and a stormy sky. This 62-story reflecting glass tower is the tallest building in New England with 790 feet in height. Its architect Ming Pei also designed the famous Le Louvre Pyramid in Paris. The building is covered with more than 10,000 panes of glass, which in the past randomly fell off of the building because of wind pressure and heat expansion! All the windows had to be replaced at a cost of 7 million dollars, and the engineers installed sensors on every panes of glass to prevent further incidents.

La tour John Hancock en toile de fond, reflète un ciel orageux dans le soleil couchant. Cette tour miroir de 62 étages est le plus haut bâtiment de la Nouvelle Angleterre avec une hauteur de 240 mètres. L’architecte, Ming Pei a aussi conçu la célèbre pyramide du Louvre à Paris. Cet édifice est recouvert de plus de 10.000 vitres, qui se sont détachées après sa construction sous l’effet de la pression du vent et de la dilatation! Toutes les fenêtres ont été remplacées pour un coût estimé à 7 millions de dollars. Les ingénieurs ont installé des capteurs sur chaque glace pour éviter qu’elles ne tombent à nouveau.

Patrolling Back Bay

Like New York, the mounted police patrols the upscale neighborhood of Back Bay and the Common. This Boston ranger group was established in 1982. Their main duty is security, but they also participate in parades and official funerals.

Comme à New York, la police montée patrouille le quartier chic de Back Bay ainsi que le Common. Ce groupe de rangers a été créé en 1982. Leur fonction principale est d’assurer la sécurité, mais ils participent aussi aux parades et aux funérailles officielles.

Spring time in Winter

On the Common, known to be one of the oldest public parks in the country, Bostonians are enjoying the sunny warm weather in winter. Weather swings, in this part of New England, are not unusual. Despite the temperature (70 degrees!), a patch of snow still remains as winter is dying out. It is hard to imagine that back in XVII century, Quakers and heretics were hanged here.

Sur le Common, un des parcs publics les plus anciens des Etats-Unis, les bostoniens profitent d’une chaude journée ensoleillée d’hiver. Il n’est pas rare de voir de telles variations brutales de température en plein hiver en Nouvelle Angleterre. Malgré la chaleur (20 degrés Celsius), de la neige persiste encore, dernières traces hivernales. Il est difficile d’imaginer qu’au XVIIème siècle, des Quakers et des hérétiques furent pendus ici même.

MIT dream house

One of the most fascinating and controversial buildings of Cambridge is the Stata Center at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), the world renown Engineering School of Boston. The architect, Frank Gehry, designed this futuristic building with tilting towers, popping out windows, and reflective aluminum surfaces. Ray and Maria Stata and Bill Gates donated funds for the center. The overall cost of the building was about 280 million dollars.

Un des immeubles les plus fascinants et controversés de Cambridge est le Stata Center au MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), l’école d’ingénieur de Boston mondialement connue. L’architecte, Frank Gehry, a conçu ce bâtiment futuriste avec des tours penchées, des fenêtres en saillie, et des surfaces en aluminium réfléchissant. Ray et Maria Stata et Bill Gates donnèrent des fonds pour la construction du centre. Le coût du bâtiment s’est élevé à environ 280 millions de dollars.
