Tiny headquarters

Who would think that I took this picture right in the middle of the Boston marina? This tiny house boat nicely decorated with flowers hosts the headquarters of a boat repair company. They specialize in yacht restoration and maintenance. They even have air conditioning. Small, but confortable!

Qui aurait pensé que j’ai pris cette photo au cœur de la marina du port de Boston? Cette minuscule maison flottante joliment décorée avec des fleurs est le siège d’une société de réparation de bateaux. Ils sont spécialisés dans la restauration et la maintenance de yachts. Ils ont même la climatisation. Petit, mais confortable!

Where everything began

We are here in a famous historical site, located in Concord (half an hour West of Boston), where, in 1775, the first battles of the American Revolutionary war took place. It was here at the North Bridge, that the Minutemen fired “the shot heard 'round the world" (a famous phrase in the US history). Throughout the year, many events commemorate this important period. Volunteers dress up and re-enact in lively scenes. Before I took this picture, the man in black was playing the role of a judge enrolling young men to go to war. To make it more realistic, they interact directly with the public and pretend they pop up from the past.

Nous voici sur un site historique célèbre, situé à Concord (à une demi-heure à l’ouest de Boston), où, en 1775, les premières batailles de la révolution américaine ont eu lieu. C’est à cet endroit, au North Bridge, que les soldats Minutemen tirèrent « the shot heard ‘round the world » ( le coup qui a fait le tour du monde), phrase célèbre dans l’histoire des Etats-Unis. Tout au long de l’année, de nombreux évènements commémorent cette période importante de l’histoire. Des volontaires se costument et jouent des scènes vivantes. Avant que je ne prenne cette photo, l’homme en noir jouait le rôle d’un juge en train d’enrôler un jeune homme dans la guerre. Pour rendre la scène plus réaliste, les acteurs interagissent directement avec le public et prétendent qu’ils surgissent du passé.

A mirror in the landscape

I took this picture from the "skywalk" observatory at the top of the Prudential tower also known as "the Pru". From there, we have an impressive view on the John Hancock tower which stands like a mirror in the landscape. We can also see in the background Boston downtown and the Common.

J'ai pris cette photo de l'observatoire "skywalk" au dernier étage de la Prudential Tower connue aussi sous le nom de "the Pru". De là-haut, une vue impressionnante nous est offerte sur la tour John Hancock, qui se dresse comme un miroir dans le paysage. On distingue à l'arrière plan le centre-ville de Boston, ainsi que le parc du Common.

Moby Cow

Looking more closely at this cow (called “Cowtucket”), the drawing on its side shows a whale and a lighthouse from Nantucket Island. Nantucket, which means “far away island”, is located 30 miles south of Cape Cod. From 1800 to 1840, it was the “Whaling capital of the World” and the third largest city in Massachusetts. This business brought a great prosperity to the island and elegant Victorian houses were built for wealthy people. The novel “Moby dick”, written by Herman Melville was inspired on the true story of a Nantucket whaling ship.

En regardant cette vache de plus près, on peut distinguer un dessin d’une baleine et d’un phare sur l’île de Nantucket. Nantucket, qui signifie “l’île lointaine” est située à 50 kilomètres au sud de Cape Cod. De 1800 à 1840, c’était la capitale de la pêche à la baleine et la troisième ville la plus importante du Massachusetts. Ce commerce a apporté la prospérité à l’île et d’élégantes maison Victoriennes ont été construites pour la classe aisée. Le roman “Moby Dick” écrit par Herman Melville est inspiré d’une histoire vraie d’un baleinier de Nantucket.

80 feet Roman majesty

As you can tell by its name, “The Boston Harbor Hotel” is located on Boston scenic waterfront. This hotel has a unique characteristic with its 80-foot majestic multi-story arch made of Italian marble and a copper dome at the top. In the lobby, over 90 old maps are on display, showing the development, and changes of Boston and New England’s coast from the 17th century through the 19th century.

Comme vous pouvez le deviner, “The Boston Harbor Hotel” est situé sur le port pittoresque de Boston. Cet hôtel a la particularité d’avoir une voûte soutenue par plusieurs arches en marbre, et est surmonté d’un dôme recouvert de cuivre. Dans l’entrée, 90 cartes anciennes montrent le développement et les transformations de Boston et de la côte de la Nouvelle Angleterre du 17ème au 19ème siècles.
