The legend stated that the first mute swans (Cygnus olor) have been introduced in England by Richard the LionHeart who brought them from its crusades in Cyprus on the late 12th century.Soon, this majestic spotless white bird became the idol of all European courts and was considered as a symbol of royalty. In England, the rare people outside the royal family in possession with swans needed a license from the crown and had to mark them on their beak to show ownership. Since then, all unmarked swans of England still belong to the crown.
Introduced in the late 1800 in the North East coast of the US, the mute swan species is protected under the US migratory Bird Act.
Don’t be fooled by its melodious song described in literature, this infinite beauty bird while walking up to me was making unpleasant hissing sound to show aggressiveness. This just goes to show that "Clothes don't make the person" isn't? :-)
La légende raconte que les premiers Cygnes tuberculés ou Cygnes muets (Cygnus olor) furent introduits en Angleterre par Richard cœur de Lion qui les rapporta lors de ses croisades en Chypre à la fin du 12ième siècle.
Bientôt, cet oiseau majestueux d’un blanc immaculé devint la coqueluche de toutes les cours d’Europe et fut considéré comme un symbole de royauté. En Angleterre, en dehors de la famille royale, les rares sujets en possession de cygnes devaient obtenir une autorisation de la couronne et placer un signe distinctif sur le bec de l’oiseau pour indiquer qu'ils leur appartenaient.
Depuis cette époque, tous les cygnes en Angleterre qui ne sont pas marqués appartiennent à la couronne.
Les cygnes tuberculés introduits sur la côte est des Etats-Unis dans la fin des années 1800 sont aujourd’hui sous la protection de « US migratory Bird Act ».
Ne vous laissez pas méprendre par son chant mélodieux décrit dans la littérature ! Cet oiseau à la beauté infinie, tout en s’approchant de moi, reproduisait un sifflement antipathique pour montrer son agressivité. Comme quoi, « L'habit ne fait pas le moine » n'est-ce pas! :-)
