The Massachusetts State dog

As you can easily guess, the “Boston Terrier” originates from Boston! Besides, it is the Massachusetts state dog! Back in the 19th century, Boston was traditionally known for its dog fighting between English bulldogs and Terriers. As a result, different crossbreedings were performed to get a better fighter. This is how "Hooper's Judge" (the ancestor of the actual “Boston Terrier”) was born in 1870. Later, in the beginning of the 20th century, this new breed became so popular that they used to be on advertising labels. Who could imagine when looking at these charming little dogs whose nickname is “the American gentleman” that they once were combative fight dogs?

Comme vous pouvez le deviner, le « Terrier de Boston» tire son origine de Boston! C’est, en plus, le chien mascotte du Massachusetts! Au 19ième siècle, Boston était réputée pour ses combats de chiens entre bouledogues et terriers. Des croisements furent donc effectués pour obtenir un meilleur combattant. Ainsi « Hooper Judge » (l’ancêtre actuel du Boston Terrier) est né. Plus tard, au début du 20ième siècle cette nouvelle race devint si prisée quelle fut utilisée dans de nombreuses publicités. Qui pourrait imaginer en voyant ces gentils petits chiens au surnom de « gentleman américain» qu’ils étaient autrefois de belliqueux chiens de combat ?

Appeal to the Great Spirit

This Cyrus Dallin’s bronze statue, honoring the American Indians history, remains one of many American sculptural icons. It stands in front of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and is called “Appeal to the great spirit”. Cast in Paris, in 1909, the sculpture won the gold medal in the Paris Salon the same year.

Cette statue en bronze de Cyrus Dallin, honorant l'histoire les Indiens d’Amérique, demeure une des nombreuses icônes de la sculpture américaine. Elle se trouve devant le Musée de Fine Arts à Boston et porte le nom de « Appeal to the great spirit” (Appel au grand esprit). Moulée à Paris en 1909, elle gagna la médaille d’or au salon de Paris la même année.

Getting all revved up!

We found ourselves back to the Larz Anderson Museum for a new event. That time, the “Tutto Italiano Car Day” was held there. More than 40 of the most luxurious cars in the world all in that place! One of the treats for any nice car lover is listening to the sound of its motor being revved up. Well! At exactly 12:00 every single Ferrari or Lamborghini car owner started it up and you could hear all the engines roaring. The sound effect was truly intense!

Nous sommes retournés au Larz Anderson Museum pour une nouvelle exposition. Cette fois, la « Tutto Italiano Car Day » s’y tenait. Plus de 40 voitures parmi les plus luxueuses du monde étaient réunies au même endroit ! Un des grands plaisirs pour tout amoureux de belles voitures est d’écouter le son du moteur poussé à plein régime. Eh bien ! A midi précises, chaque propriétaire d’une Ferrari ou d’une Lamborghini a démarré son automobile et tous les moteurs se sont mis à rugir. L’effet sonore était vraiment intense !

Brother wanted!

A while ago I posted a photo of the State House gold dome. This time we are in the Senate reception room where you can see a very recent portrait of the former senator William Bulger. His tenure, which lasted for 17 years, (from 1978 to 1996) made him the longest senate president to be in office in state history. He then served as the president of University Of Massachusetts from 1996 to 2003 but he was forced by Republican Gov. Mitt Romney to resign because he was suspected to have helped cover for his fugitive gangster brother, Whitey Bulger who is one of the top 10 most wanted in America ! If you run into Whitey tell the FBI know and you will receive a 1,000,000 dollars reward!

Il y a quelque temps, j’avais posté une photo du dôme doré de la state house. Cette fois, nous sommes dans la pièce de réception du Sénat où vous pouvez découvrir un portrait très récent de l’ancien sénateur, William Bulger. Il resta en fonction pendant 17 ans (de 1978 à 1996), ce qui correspond au plus long mandat dans l’histoire du Sénat. Il fut ensuite président de l’université du Massachusetts entre 1996 et 2003, mais fut poussé par le gouverneur républicain Mitt Romney à démissionner car il était soupçonné d’avoir couvert son frère, le fugitif et gangster Whitey Bulger, qui figure parmi les dix hommes les plus recherchés d’Amérique ! Si vous croisez Whitey, faites-le savoir au FBI et une récompense de 1.000.000 dollars vous sera remise !

Wildlife on the outskirts of Boston

Yes, there are coyotes just outside Boston! Thousands of them established in Massachusetts and they are frequently spotted in the suburban areas roaming in backyards. This dog-type animal is considered as a “protected species” in many states including Massachusetts. Coyotes are not a threat to humans, however they are for cats and small dogs which are seen as a prey for them. Some people are concerned about their presence and see a potential danger for their children.
Do you think action should be taken to control coyotes' proliferation?

Et oui, il y a des coyotes aux portes de Boston! Des milliers d’entre eux se sont établis dans le Massachusetts et sont fréquemment aperçus dans la banlieue errant dans les jardins. Ce type de chien est considéré comme une espèce protégée dans de nombreux Etats y compris le Massachusetts. Les coyotes ne sont pas une menace pour l’homme, cependant les chats et les chiens de petite taille sont considérés comme des proies. Certaines personnes sont préoccupées par leur présence et voient un danger potentiel pour leurs enfants.
Pensez-vous que des mesures devraient être prises pour limiter la prolifération des coyotes?

The Ten O'clock News!

Our vacation in Oregon is over and we had a great time. Back to Boston, here is a photo of the waterfront where you can see, in the middle, the Custom House Tower which was the first skyscraper in Boston. This historic landmark, originally a three story building, was built in 1847 and the next twenty-six floor added in 1915. Since 1998, it is part of the Marriott hotel chain. The clock tower is shown at every opening of “The Ten O’clock news” on WLVI TV channel 56.

Nos vacances dans l’Oregon sont terminées et nous avons passé de très bons moments. De retour à Boston, voici une photo du front de mer où vous pouvez distinguer au centre, la « Custom House Tower » qui fut le premier gratte-ciel de Boston. Ce point de repère historique, à l’origine un immeuble de trois étages, fut construit en 1847 et les vingt-six étages suivants furent ajoutés en 1915. Depuis 1998, il fait partie de la chaîne d’hôtel Marriott. La tour avec l’horloge est montrée à chaque ouverture du journal télévisé « The Ten O’clock news » sur la chaîne 56- WLVI.
