John Hancock's office

Nested in the historic 1760’s Gardner Building, in Long wharf, “The Chart House” seafood Restaurant is the oldest building on the Boston waterfront. This brick building used to house the offices of the American patriot John Hancock in the 1770’s. The picturesque and rustic décor inside offers exposed beams and beautiful wrought iron details. In 2001, its structure was close to collapsing into the harbor; therefore a long renovation had to be done to save it. During the past twenty years Long Wharf went through major transformations, and became a very desirable area filled with luxurious apartments, shops, entertainment, hotels, and restaurants. When it was built, Long wharf was the longest wharf in North America.

Niché dans le bâtiment historique Gardner qui date des année 1760 et situé sur Long Wharf, le restaurant “The Chart House” spécialisé dans les poissons et fruits de mer, est le plus vieux bâtiment du front de mer. Cet immeuble en briques a servi de bureaux au patriote américain John Hancock dans les années 1770. L’intérieur révèle un décor pittoresque et rustique avec des poutres apparentes et des détails en fer forgé. En 2001, la structure du bâtiment étant sur le point de s’effondrer dans le port, des travaux de rénovation ont été entrepris pour la sauver. Ces vingt dernières années, Long Wharf a connu des transformations majeures, et est devenu un quartier recherché avec des appartements luxueux, des magasins, des divertissements, des hôtels et des restaurants. A sa construction, le Long Wharf était le plus long quai d’Amérique du Nord.

Sea Cow

So the cow parade has “moooved” to Boston! 117 of life-sized, painted cows are displayed around the city. This one is called “Coral” and has been designed by Dawn Evans Scultreto. It is located on Long Wharf in Boston harbor. Excursion boats leave the harbor for whale watches and cruises.

La parade des vaches est maintenant à Boston! 117 vaches grandeur nature sont présentées dans la ville. Celle-ci peinte par l’artiste Dawn Evans Scultreto a été surnommée “Coral”. Elle est située à Long Wharf dans le port de Boston. Les bateaux d’excursion partent de là pour aller voir les baleines, ou pour des croisières dans les environs.

Pomp and circumstance!

Yesterday my brother had his high school graduation. In accordance with a tradition that dates back to the 12th century from the European universities, all schools and colleges in America after completing a cycle of studies, have a pomp and circumstance graduation ceremony. For this special occasion, each student wears an academic dress with a color of gown and cap assigned by the school, ornamented with a tassel. The ceremonial rite commands that the tassel should be worn on the left side of the cap before diploma is handed and moved to the right side after diploma is received. At the end of the ceremony, the graduates toss their caps into the air.

Hier, mon frère célébrait sa remise de diplôme du lycée. Selon une tradition du 12 siècle inspirée des universités Européennes, chaque fin de cycle d’études est clôturée, dans tous les lycées et universités d’Amérique du nord, par une cérémonie en grande pompe. Pour cette occasion, les étudiants doivent porter un uniforme traditionnel. Ce costume, dont la couleur est assignée par l’école, est composé d’une robe longue et d’une toque carrée ornementée d’un pompon. Le rite impose que le pompon soit porté sur le coté gauche de la toque avant la remise du diplôme et déplacé ensuite à droite de la toque après l'obtention du diplôme. A la fin de la cérémonie, tous les diplômés lancent leur toque en l’air.

A skyscraper trio

Remember the photo I took last week? This shot is from the opposite side of the fountain and basin. From there, we have a great view on three Boston towers. On the left, the Prudential tower, in the center, the high rise tower “111 Huntington Avenue” recently built in 2002, and on the right, the Scientist Church administration building.

Vous souvenez vous de la photo de la semaine dernière? Celle-ci a été prise à l’opposé de la fontaine et du bassin. Depuis cet endroit, nous avons une vue sur trois tours bostoniennes. A gauche, la tour Prudential, au centre le récent gratte-ciel «111 Huntington Avenue” construit en 2002, et à droite le bâtiment administratif de l’Eglise Scientiste.
