Harvard Square is world-renowned for its famous university, but it is also a great place to spend time with friends, listen to music, and watch street performers. For two dollars, you can even try to beat the chess master. With his straw hat, he smokes a cigar, always ready for a keen competition. Back to school!

Students like to gather at the Boston Public Library, founded in 1848 and opened to public in 1854. It was the first free municipal library in the world. The “Bates Hall” reading room was named after Joshua Bates, a London banker who donated 50,000 dollars to the library to purchase the books. This room has interesting architectural details. It features a stunning wide arched ceiling with two domes at each end.

Les étudiants aiment se retrouver à la "Boston Public Library", fondée en 1848 et ouverte au public en 1854. C’était alors la première bibliothèque gratuite au monde. La salle de lecture Bates Hall qui porte le nom de Joshua Bates, un banquier londonien qui fit don de 50.000 dollars à la bibliothèque pour l’achat des livres. Cette salle a des détails architecturaux intéressants. Elle possède un large et superbe plafond en forme d’arche avec un dôme à chaque bout.

Performing at Town Day

Performing for us at the annual Town Day, is our very own Arlington High School Jazz band conducted by Sabato D'Agostino. Town day is the opportunity for the residents to get together and enjoy "fair" activities. Many booths offer bake sales, displays, craft exhibits, raffles, games, and food.

L'orchestre de jazz de la High School d'Arlington joue pour notre grand plaisir à la foire annuelle de la ville. C'est l'occasion pour les résidents de se retrouver et de faire la fête. De nombreux stands offrent des ventes de pâtisseries, des objets d'artisanat, des tombolas, des jeux, et des plats cuisinés.

Oval box mystery

So, who made these oval boxes and what were they used for? Well, you have all posted very good answers. It all started in 1774 with "Mother" Ann Lee and eight other Religious Utopians who came to New York for practicing freely their religious beliefs. They were called "Shakers" because of their very odd way of dancing. They were also very good craftsmen and made these oval boxes for selling them and also used them for storing all kinds of things like, dry goods, needles, thread, etc. everything except for liquids.

Qui a donc crée ces boites ovales et à quoi elles servaient? Eh bien, vous avez tous eu de très bonnes réponses. Tout a commencé en 1774 avec "Mère" Anne Lee et huit autres religieux utopistes qui vinrent à New York afin de pratiquer librement leur croyance religieuse. On les appela "skakers" à cause de leur façon singulière de danser. Ils étaient aussi de très bons artisans et fabriquèrent ces boites ovales pour la vente et les utilisèrent aussi pour ranger toutes sortes de choses comme des produits secs, des aiguilles, des fils à coudre, des rubans etc. mais aucun liquide.

A land for a woolen coat

In the gardens of the Arlington’s town hall, the Robbins Memorial Flagstaff exhibits on its pedestal four bronze seated figures symbolizing Patriotism, Liberty, Obedience, and Honor. Before the pilgrims arrived in New England, the Boston area was inhabited by Indian tribes. Squaw Sachem sold her land to the colonist John Winthrop for few shillings and a woolen coat every winter for the rest of her life. Represented on the left is the mother pilgrim, and on the right is Squaw Sachem.

Dans les jardins de la mairie d’Arlington, le piédestal du Robbins Memorial Flagstaff représente quatre statues assises symbolisant le Patriotisme, la Liberté, l’Obéissance et l’Honneur. Avant que les pilgrims ne s’installent en Nouvelle Angleterre, la région de Boston était habitée par des tribus indiennes. Squaw Sachem vendit ses terres au colon John Winthrop pour quelques shillings et en échange d’un manteau de laine fourni tous les hivers jusqu’à sa mort.

This plane is about to land at Logan International Airport, located almost in the center of Boston. Logan has a record of being one of the 20 busiest airports in the United States, with well over 27 million passengers each year. The airport was named after general Edward Lawrence Logan who fought during World War I in France. When landing, the passengers have a wonderful view of Boston’s skyline, featured in the background of this photo.

Cet avion va bientôt atterrir à l’aéroport international Logan situé presque au centre de Boston. Logan est un des 20 aéroports qui ont le plus de trafic aux Etats-Unis, avec plus de 27 millions de passagers par an. L’aéroport tient son nom du général Edward Lawrence Logan qui a combattu en France durant la première guerre mondiale. A l’atterrissage, les passagers ont une très belle vue sur Boston, que l’on aperçoit à l'arrière plan.
