After living in Boston for 12 years, I finally tried the Boston duck tour with a witty “cowgirl” driver and it was a fun and very informative experience. This half boat and half truck amphibious vehicle was designed by General Motors during World War II, and played a crucial role on D-Day, June 6, 1944, when more than 2,000 amphibious tanks were used to carry soldiers and supplies on the beaches of Normandy. Its official name is D.U.K.W which is a military code representing its characteristics. ”D” for the year of the production (1942), “U” for utility truck, “K” for Front wheel drive, and “W” for two rear driving wheels. Today, it’s no longer a military truck but a colorful duck that roams the streets and the river carrying tourists to learn about the city for a fun adventure. This duck tour is not a privilege of Boston, there are 23 others similar amphibious tour in the world: 19 in the US, 2 in England, 1 in Ireland, and1 in Nova Scotia.
Après avoir vécu douze ans à Boston, j’ai enfin testé le Boston Duck Tour avec une « cowgirl » pleine d’humour au volant, et ce fut une expérience amusante et très instructive. Ce véhicule amphibie à moitié voiture à moitie camion a été fabriqué par General Motors pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale et a joué un rôle crucial le jour du débarquement du 6 juin 1944 quand plus de 2000 chars amphibies ont été utilisés pour transporter les soldats et leur équipement sur les plages de Normandie. Son nom est D.U.K.W, qui est un code militaire représentant ses caractéristiques. « D » pour l’année de production (1942), « U » pour camion utilitaire, « K » traction avant, et « W » pour traction arrière. Aujourd’hui, ce n’est plus un char de combat mais un « canard » coloré qui sillonne les rues et la rivière transportant des touristes pour une aventure tout en découvrant l’histoire de la ville. Amusant, cela dit être tres sympathique à faire. tu parles de l'histoire de la ville, cela va loin (tres loin) jusqu'au dinosaure ;o).

The tour of Boston is great. I learnt a lot about your city on such a tour while visiting in 2003 - although it was not the DUCK tour. Walking the tourist trail following the yellow bricks was also very informative and your pictures bring back memories. Thanks for your great photos.
J'ai vu un engin de ce genre à Kuranda en Australie, mais je ne savais pas que Boston était encore si sauvage et inaccessible qu'il faille un véhicule spécial pour l'aborder...;-)
