A cool lady

A young lady is refreshing under the fountain of the Mother Church of the Christian Science. The church was established by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 and became an international organization in 1892, widely known for its publications based on healing through prayer. However, it has no connection neither with science nor scientology. The Romanesque building church in the background was built in 1894. It was extended in 1906, and a large library was added in 1932. The plaza, including the large 28 floors administration building, the colonnade, the reflecting pool and the fountain were completed in 1970.

Une jeune femme se rafraîchit sous la fontaine de la “Mother Church of the Christian Science”. Ce courant religieux fut établit par Mary Baker Eddy en 1879 et devint une organisation internationale en 1892. Connue pour ses publications fondées sur la guérison par la prière, cette église n’a, cependant, aucun fondement scientifique, ni aucune filiation avec les scientologistes. L’église de style roman à l’arrière plan, fut construite en 1894 et agrandie en 1906. Une grande bibliothèque fut ajoutée in 1932, puis un immeuble de 28 étages, une colonnade, un bassin et une fontaine furent achevés en 1970.

Sand bags to the rescue

Last week, tropical rains struck the Boston area for a few days and submerged several towns. In Massachusetts, 2,500 residents had to be evacuated from their homes. About 270 National Guards were called out to help to control the flooding. In my neighborhood they installed sandbags to prevent water from the nearby lake to submerge the residence. This storm has been reported as the worst flooding since the 1930’s.

La semaine dernière, des pluies tropicales se sont abattues sur la région de Boston pendant plusieurs jours et ont submergé un certain nombre de villes. Dans le Massachusetts, 2.500 résidents ont été évacués. Environ 270 Gardes Nationaux ont été appelés pour contrôler les inondations. Dans mon quartier, des sacs de sable furent installés pour empêcher l’eau du lac avoisinant d’inonder la résidence. Cette tempête figure parmi l’une des plus importantes depuis les années 1930.

Can you hear me now?

Every time I go to the DeCordova museum, it is a real enchantment. The park, located in Lincoln, half an hour away from Boston, is the largest exhibition of contemporary outdoor sculptures in New England. A large variety of artwork made of stone, wood, metal, plastic or glass is displayed in the park. Each year a number of them rotate in and out of the park while others remain part of the permanent exhibition. This figurative stone sculpture, which is not shown anymore, was quite appreciated by this playful kid.

Chacune de mes visites au musée DeCordova est un réel enchantement. Le parc, situé à Lincoln, à une demi heure de Boston, est la plus grande exposition à ciel ouvert de sculptures contemporaines en Nouvelle Angleterre. Une grande variété d’œuvres d’art réalisées avec différents matériaux, pierre, bois, métal, plastique, ou verre, est exposée dans le parc. Chaque année, un certain nombre d’entre elles sont remplacées, tandis que d’autres font partie de l’exposition permanente. Cette sculpture figurative en pierre qui n’est plus exposée aujourd’hui, a fait la joie de ce jeune espiègle.

Lifeguard off duty

Sandy Beach, only 20 minutes away from downtown Boston is enjoying its last moment of peace and quiet before the summer season. This public beach is located on Upper Mystic Lake, in Medford and is part of the Mystic River that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The name “Mystic” comes from the Indian “Missi-Tuk” which means “great tidal river”, because the river having once been tidal. The Native Americans used to fish alewives along the river, and the tradition perpetuated across the centuries. Soon sail boats will take over the lake and we will see regattas.

Sandy Beach, à seulement 20 minutes du centre de Boston, profite des derniers moments de tranquillité avant la saison d’été. Cette plage publique se situe sur le Upper Mystic Lake, à Medford et elle fait partie de la rivière Mystic qui se jette dans l’Océan Atlantique. Le nom de “Mystic” vient de l’indien “Missi-Tuk” qui signifie “la grande marée” car la rivière avait autrefois des marées. Les Indiens venaient y pêcher des harengs et la tradition s’est perpétuée jusqu’à nos jours. Bientôt les voiliers s’empareront du lac et des régates seront organisées.

Golden landmark

You cannot miss this golden dome, which is used as a landmark by many Bostonians. It belongs to the Massachusetts State House and overlooks the “Boston Common” on “Beacon Hill”. Designed by Charles Bulfinch in 1798, the dome went through different colors; it was painted gray, light yellow, and then repainted dull gray again during World War II to hide itself from the enemy ships. Finally in 1874 the dome was covered with 23.5 karat gold leaves. To keep it bright and shiny it is redone every 25 years. If you look closely you can see at the top a golden pinecone, which is the symbol of the abundant forests that the early settlers exploited in Massachusetts.

Vous ne pouvez pas rater ce dôme doré qui sert de point de repère aux Bostoniens. Il fait partie du Massachusetts State House à “Beacon Hill” qui surplombe le “Boston Common”. Crée par Charles Bulfinch en 1798, le dôme est passé par différentes couleurs; il a été d’abord peint en gris puis jaune clair, et repeint en gris foncé pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale pour ne pas être la cible des bateaux ennemis. Enfin en 1874, le dôme fut doré à la feuille d’or 23.5 carats. Pour garder son éclat et son reflet brillant, cette opération est renouvelée tous les 25 ans. Si vous regardez de plus prêt, vous pouvez voir au sommet une pomme de pin dorée qui est le symbole des nombreuses forêts que les premiers colons exploitèrent dans le Massachusetts.

All aboard the "T"

On my way to the Boston Public Library I took a picture of this mosaic located at Park Street station. It reminds passengers that the first underground subway in America was built in Boston. This station is part of the green line which has the oldest tunnel running along Tremont Street. It opened on September 1st, 1897. The Boston subway system, known as the “T” because of the logo from MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), is divided into 4 branches: green, red, orange and blue.

En allant à la bibliothèque publique de Boston, j’ai pris en photo cette mosaïque à la station de métro Park Street. Elle rappelle aux voyageurs que le premier métro souterrain d’Amérique du Nord a été construit à Boston. Cette station fait partie de la ligne verte qui possède le plus ancien tunnel construit sous Tremont Street. Elle a été inaugurée le 1er septembre 1897. Le métro de Boston, plus connu sous le nom de “T” en raison du logo du MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), est divisée en 4 lignes : verte, rouge, orange et bleu.
